Monday, January 04, 2010 PORTALES, N.M. - Jimmie Marshall (Sr., G, Milwaukee, Wis./Iowa Lakes CC) and Tyler Jefferson (Jr., F, Fort Worth, Texas/Tyler JC) each scored 13 points, but the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team (5-7) dropped an 82-59 decision to visiting Fort Lewis College (9-3), Monday evening at Greyhound Arena. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for ENMU in the series, with the Hounds last loss to the Skyhawks coming by a 79-77 score on November 30, 1992, in Durango, Colo.Eastern took a 6-4 lead on a pair of Victor Reid (Jr., F, El Paso, Texas/Cochise CC) free throws 3:25 into the game, but Fort Lewis used a 12-4 run fueled by four consecutive points from Kyle Behrens to seize a 16-10 lead. The Skyhawks retained the momentum, building a 25-15 lead with 9:10 left in the opening half, before a Marshall free throw sparked an 8-1 ENMU run over the next 2:19, pulling the Hounds to within 26-23 with 6:11 left in the period. After the teams exchanged baskets, the Skyhawks used a 9-2 run to rebuild their lead to ten points, before taking a 39-29 edge into the locker room. Fort Lewis took their largest lead to that point, 45-32, on a DeAndre Lansdowne layup, 2:18 into the second half, but the Hounds scored five consecutive points in less than a minute to pull within eight points, 45-37, but a Matt Billups jumper ignited a 10-4 FLC run as the Skyhawks pulled away for the win. Eastern scored 40 of their 49 points in the paint, while Fort Lewis managed 38 points in the painted area. The Skyhawks controlled the boards by a 41-21 margin, including a 12-5 margin on the offensive glass. Equs Darby (Sr., F, Lake City, S.C./Feather River College) finished with seven points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots, while Reid and Alan Branch (Jr., G, Houston, Texas/Tyler JC) chipped in six points apiece. Josh Megyeri (Jr., G, Manitou Springs, Colo./Trinidad State) poured in seven points and had a pair of steals. Behrens paced Fort Lewis offensively with 24 points and 10 rebounds. The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, when they resume Lone Star Conference crossover play at University of Central Oklahoma, in Edmond, Okla. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST. |
