KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — Despite recording its second 100-yard rushing effort of the season, the Eastern New Mexico University football team (2-7; LSC South 0-5) was unable to topple 14th-ranked Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-1; LSC South 3-1) Saturday night in a Lone Star Conference south division road game, falling 31-38, at Javelina Stadium. Freshman tailback Stefan Mills (RB, Freshman, Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) led the Hounds on the ground, rushing for 103 yards on 27 carries and scoring two touchdowns, setting a personal best for rushing yardage. The game also saw the return of J.J. Harp (QB, So., Argyle, Texas/Argyle HS) who went 36-53-1 during the contest, throwing for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Harp also rushed the ball 14 times for 58 yards. The Hounds leading receiver was once again Dominic Preston (WR, Sophomore, College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated HS) who hauled in 11 receptions for 120 yards. Arvin Jackson (WR, So., Houston, Texas/Westside HS) also had a good game statistically, recording ten receptions for 94 yards and one score. Defensively, the Hounds were led by linebacker Edward Zamora (OLB, Sr., San Antonio, Texas/Taft HS/NMMI) who also recorded a career game, tallying 16 stops, including one tackle for a loss and one forced fumble. Mark Patterson (DB, Sr., Dallas, Texas/R.L. Turner HS) was also in double digits for the Hounds, recording a career-high 12 stops. Derek Dimitroff (ILB, Sr., Fort Sumner, N.M./Fort Sumner HS) recorded nine stops for the Hounds and Texavier Henry (LB, Senior, Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) tallied seven. ENMU also managed to block two kicks during the game, bringing their total to six for the season and four in the last three games. After their first two drives ended on a punt and an interception, the Hounds took the field for their third possession trailing 14-0. A one-yard run by Mills would cap a ten-play, 66-yard drive that took 2:41 off of the clock. The Hounds would trail 14-7 with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter. Eastern New Mexico would begin their next scoring drive with 8:38 in the second quarter following two scores by the Javelinas. Down 28-7, a Harp pass to receiver Darian Dale (WR, So., Bay City, Texas/Bay City HS) would cement a six-play, 60-yard drive that would take 1:33 off of the clock. Following the failed PAT, the Hounds would trail 28-13 with 6:57 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds would pick up another score on their second possession of the third quarter, when Mills would rush in from one yard out. After the PAT, the Hounds would cut the deficit to nine, trailing 28-19 with 8:10 remaining in the third quarter. Entering the fourth quarter, the Hounds offense would take the field trailing 31-19 following a TAMUK field goal. The Hounds would score on a Jackson touchdown reception at the end of a 16-play, 80 yard drive, taking 4:23 off of the clock, making the score 31-25 in favor of the Javelinas with 5:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. Following a quick 32-yard rush by Kingsville, the Hound offense would take the field again, trailing 38-25 with 5:16 remaining in the game. The Hound offense would once again take the methodical approach, moving the ball down the field on a nine-play, 60-yard drive, and taking 1:52 off of the clock. A seven-yard strike from Harp to Chase Kyser (WR, Fr., Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) would cut the lead to seven, putting the score at 38-31 in favor of the Javelinas, however, the Hounds would not get another chance as Kingsville would take the field and run out the clock to finalize the score. The Hounds will return to action next Saturday, hosting No. 17 Midwestern State. Kickoff is schedule for 7 pm MST at Greyhound Stadium in Blackwater Draw. |
