PORTALES, N.M.— The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (8-9; LSC 3-6) turned in a strong defensive game in Sunday’s home finale, but dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Angelo State in Lone Star Conference action, amid windy and chilly conditions at the ENMU Soccer Field. Prior to the contest, the Zias honored their four seniors, Samantha Lawrence (F, Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS), Michelle Sumner (D, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS), Leslie Weber (MF, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS) and Annette Meadows (MF, Sierra Vista, Ariz./Cochise CC/Buena Vista HS).

The first half saw both squads play strong defense, with the teams each having two shots apiece. The Rambelles snapped the scoreless tie with 6:28 left in regulation when Jennifer Bukowski fired a cross pass from the left side of the ENMU net and Brandie DeBacker bounced a shot off a diving ENMU defender for her eighth goal of the season, giving Angelo State a 1-0 lead.

Eastern appeared to have tied the game with just over five minutes left to play, when the ball came out of a group of players in front of the ASU net following a Mackenzie Morris (So., MF, Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty HS) corner kick, but Eastern was called for a hand ball, nullifying the goal.

Each team had a total of seven shots in the game, but the Rambelles finished with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Zias had all four corner kicks. ENMU goal keeper Sierra Cardenas (So., GK, Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) made three saves in the contest, while her counterpart, Melanie Peterson had two saves. Sumner, Danielle Thurman (So., Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte HS) and Brook Serrano (Fr., F, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) each had two shots for Eastern, with both of Thurman’s shots being on goal.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will travel to Ada, Okla., on Friday, to play another LSC match, against East Central University. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. MST.
