Trailing 12-8 in the opening set, the Zias used a 5-1 run fueled by four Ovalle kills and a pair of Grace Brandt (Jr., S, Dumas, Texas/Dumas HS) kills to seize a 15-12 lead, forcing the Javelinas to call time out. After play resumed, the Javelinas surged to tie the match at 18-all, but the Zias managed to take a 20-18 lead on a kill from Ovalle and a Jessica King (So., MB, Las Cruces, N.M./Oñate HS) service ace, before TAMU-Kingsville closed out the set with a 7-1 run. The second set saw the Javelinas charge to a 10-2 lead, but the Zias managed to pull within 15-10, on a King kill, but could come no closer as Kingsville pulled away for a 25-16 win for a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The Javelinas held an 18-9 lead in the third set, before an attack error followed by an Ovalle kill sparked a Zia rally that saw Eastern pull within 23-19, on a Koch service ace, but Texas A&M-Kingsville scored the next two points on kills from Tara Grier and Kristin Chancellor to close out the match.
