ADA, OKLA.— Jordan Sjue (So., MF, Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) and Brook Serrano (Fr., F, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) scored back-to-back goals early in the first half to give the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (8-10; LSC 3-6) a 2-1 lead, but East Central (6-7-2; LSC 3-6) scored twice in the second half to hand the Zias a 3-2 loss in Lone Star Conference play, Friday afternoon at Lady Tiger Field. The Tigers struck quickly, seizing a 1-0 lead on Ashleigh Peete’s goal 15 seconds into the game. Sjue netted her second goal in the last three games 9:07 into the game on a shot from 25-yards out, pulling ENMU even at 1-all. Just 12:37 later, Serrano took a cross pass from Danielle Thurman (So., MF, Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte HS) on the right wing and staked the Zias to a 2-1 lead. Eastern took the lead into halftime as Sierra Cardenas (So., GK, Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) made a save on the only ensuing ECU shot on goal. Eastern outshot the Tigers by a 13-4 margin through the opening 45 minutes, although ECU had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Tigers displayed their quick-strike ability again, tying the match at 2-all on Whitney Watts 12th goal of the season, just 1:27 into the second half. Watts struck again for the game-winning goal on a through ball from Jordan Wozniak with 20:32 left in regulation. The Zias held an 18-8 edge in total shots, with a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, although the Tigers had a 9-5 lead in corner kicks. Thurman’s fifth assist of the season tied her for fifth in that category on the ENMU single-season list. Cardenas made two saves for Eastern, while Natalie Wilson made seven saves for ECU. The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will conclude their 2009 season on Sunday, when visit Northeastern State, in Tahlequah, Okla. Match time is set for 11 a.m. MST. |
