STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS— Jessica King (Las Cruces, N.M./Oñate HS) turned in an eight-kills performance, but the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team (5-22; LSC 0-12) dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) decision at Tarleton State (9-19; LSC 4-7) in Lone Star Conference action, Saturday afternoon at Wisdom Gym. In the opening set, Eastern pulled to within 11-8, on a Veronica Valdez-Kent (Jr., S, Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) kill, but the TexAnns scored seven of the next 11 points to take an 18-11 edge on the way to a 25-17 win. Tarleton seized an early 7-3 lead in the second set, but a pair of Grace Brandt (Jr., S, Dumas, Texas/Dumas HS) service aces fueled a 5-1 Zia run, pulling Eastern to within two points, 10-8. Eastern retained the momentum, knotting the score at 12-all on a kill from Rocio Ovalle (FR., OH, Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces HS) and taking their first lead of the set on kill from Megan Longoria (Fr., MB, Del Valle, Texas/Del Valle High School). Tarleton responded by scoring the next two points, taking the lead for good, 14-13, on an attack error, on the way to a 25-18 win. The TexAnns got off to a quick start in the third set, scoring the first four points, but an Ovalle kill ignited a 6-2 run, tied the match on a block from Brandt and King. Tarleton took the lead back on an Erin Lynn kill and won the set by a 25-15 score. Ovalle finished with seven kills, while Caitlin Murphy (Sr., L, Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa HS) had 13 digs. Brandt finished with nine digs and two service splitters, while Valdez-Kent had 22 assists and four digs. Lynn had six kills and five blocks for Tarleton State. The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team will visit New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday evening, before concluding the 2009 season at sixth-ranked West Texas A&M. |
