James ties match with three seconds left
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS— The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team (11-5-2) appeared to be headed to their third consecutive loss, but senior defender Michael James (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch HS) tied Saturday's match against St. Mary's (5-10-1) with three seconds left and Mario Alarcon (Sr., F, Freemont, Neb./Midland Lutheran) tallied the game-winning goal 4:15 into the second overtime, lifting the Hounds to a 3-2 victory, at St. Mary's Field. The win was the second straight for the Hounds in the series with the Rattlers and the fourth consecutive meeting between the teams decided by a single goal. With the win, the Greyhounds set a new ENMU record for wins in a season, eclipsing the 10-8-1 record set by the Zias in the 2005 season. The Hounds are 2-0-2 in overtime matches this season and have not lost in overtime since dropping a 3-2 decision at West Texas A&M on September 21, 2006. St. Mary’s took an early lead, when Sean Strater’s throw in went off a defender’s head in the defensive zone and found the back of the ENMU net for an own goal. The rest of the opening half was played on even terms, with Eastern holding a 4-2 edge in shots and a decisive 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Early in the second half Emerson Rodrigues (Jr., F, Natal, RN, Brazil/Colegio Objectivo Portigar) bounced a shot off a SMU defender to pull the Hounds even, 4:15 into the period. The goal was his 13th of the season and the eighth in the last seven games. St. Mary’s took a 2-1 lead with 19:54 left in regulation, when Robson Pritchett scored on a deflection, but Michael James (Sr., D, Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch HS) fired a shot into the far corner of the SMU net with three seconds left in regulation. Each team had a single shot during the first overtime. Alarcon took the only shot of the second overtime period, dribbling into the penalty area and chipping a shot over goalkeeper Brett Collier into the far corner of the net. Eastern New Mexico University held a 15-7 edge in total shots in the match, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Alistair Caldwell (Fr., GK, Kilmarnock, Scotland/Grange Academy) made one save for the Hounds, while Collier had four for St. Mary’s. The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will conclude their 2009 season next Friday, when they visit Northeastern State, in Tahlequah, Okla. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m. MST. |
