TAHLEQUAH, OKLA.— Senior forward Samantha Lawrence (Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) scored with just 8:02 remaining in regulation to lift the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (9-10; LSC 4-6) to a 1-0 victory over Northeastern State (5-11-1; LSC 1-8-1) in Lone Star Conference action, Sunday afternoon at RiverHawks Pitch. The match marked the first road victory in the series with NSU for the Zias in four tries. The first half was a defensive struggle between the teams, with Eastern holding a slight 4-3 edge in total shots, while each squad was limited to a single shot on goal. ENMU goal keeper Candice Guthrie (So., Peralta, N.M./Los Lunas HS) denied the River Hawks final scoring opportunity, making a save on Celeste St. Gemme’s header with 12:27 remaining. Lawrence took a pass from Tasha Caulder (So., F, Odessa, Texas/Permian HS), before tallying her seventh goal of the season. Northeastern State had a final corner kick with 1:17 left, but the Zias did not allow a shot. Already the career leader in game-winning goals, Lawrence increased her career total to 13 over her four seasons ENMU held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, but Northeastern State enjoyed a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Caulder had two shots on goal, while Lawrence and Michelle Sumner (Sr., D, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) had one apiece. Guthrie made three saves in net to improve her record to 2-1 on the season, while PJ Davis made three saves for NSU. With the win, Eastern snapped a two-match skid against NSU, improving to 3-4 in the overall series. The Zias last win over the River Hawks was a 3-0 decision, on October 6, 2006. |
