Hounds Fall in Season Finale at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.— The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (11-6-2; LSC 1-5) concluded the best season in the history of the program with a tough 5-0 loss to Northeastern State (9-9; LSC 1-4) in Lone Star Conference action, Friday afternoon at Riverhawk Pitch. The Greyhounds’ 11 wins this season eclipsed the team’s previous record for victories in a season of eight, set during the 2007 season.

NSU’s top goal scorer, Sam Vernalis scored 10:30 into the contest and again 6:06 into the second half, staking the River Hawks to a 2-0 lead. Northeastern State scored three more goals in the second half, extending their lead to 5-0.

The Hounds held a 5-3 edge in first half shots, but NSU held a 6-3 edge in the second period. Alistair Caldwell (Fr., GK, Kilmarnock, Scotland/Grange Academy) made two of his three saves in the second half, while NSU goal keeper made one save. Eastern entered the match ranked fourth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Central Region poll, while Northeastern State was ranked sixth in the poll.
