PORTALES, N.M. — Seniors Samantha Lawrence (F, Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) and Michelle Sumner (D, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team have been selected Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 6 for their efforts on the field and in the classroom during the 2009 season. The Zias have had at least one player selected Academic All-District since the 2005 season.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, play in a minimum of half of the team’s contests and have been on the team at the institution for a minimum of a year.
Lawrence’s selection marks the third time she has been a member of the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team in the last three seasons. A health and physical education major, she will conclude the most prolific career in Zia soccer history this Sunday, holding the career records in goals, goals per game, game-winning goals, shots, shots per game, shots on goal and shots on goal per game. As a senior, she registered multiple-goal games in victories over Howard Payne and New Mexico Highlands.
Sumner, a criminal justice major, also will be concluding her ENMU soccer career this weekend. Over the last three seasons, she has been one of the Lone Star Conference’s top defensive players, garnering three selections as the LSC defensive player of the week, including twice this season. Sumner’s efforts helped the Zias post five consecutive shutout victories earlier this year, including a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked West Texas A&M. For her career, she has tallied four goals, including one in a win at Wayland Baptist this season.
