PORTALES, NM — Abilene Christian University, ranked 9th in NCAA Division II, shut out Eastern New Mexico University in the season-opener for both teams on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Zia Tennis Complex. The Wildcats swept the three doubles flights and won all six singles flights in the Lone Star Conference match. At #1 doubles, ACU’s Holly Lindloff and Lana Pavlin recorded a 8-2 victory over ENMU’s Elyse Jacques (Sr., Austin, TX/Westwood HS) and Erica Kelly (Sr., Stockton, CA/Tokay HS). Eastern’s #2 doubles team of Ashley Toye (So., Kelowna, BC, Canada/Mt. Boucherie Secondary) and Eve Andrews (Fr., Center, TX/Center HS) was defeated 8-1 by Meagan Brown and Sarah Drummond. In the third flight of doubles, Irene Squillaci and Sandra Vucic were 8-1 winners over Cassidy Bancks (So, Marysville, BC,Canada/Mt. Baker Secondary) and Tracy Williams (Fr., Safford, AZ/Safford High School). At #1 singles, Jacques lost to Squillaci, 6-1, 6-0. Kelly won a game in each set in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Meagan Brown at #2 singles. Hughes, playing her first college-level tennis match, put up a good fight in #3 singles, before losing, 6-3, 6-2, to Drummond. Andrews lost with an identical 6-3, 6-2 score at #4 singles to Vucic. In the fifth flight, Bancks lost to Lindloff, 6-1, 6-2. At #6 singles, Toye was shut out by Sarah Baker, 6-0, 6-0. ENMU does not play again until Friday, Feb. 17, when the Zias host Western New Mexico University at 1 p.m. MST. On Feb. 18, Eastern will play at home again with a 9 a.m. MST match against Tarleton State University, followed by an afternoon match against East Central University at 1 p.m. MST. |
