ENMU records first victory in program’s history against WT

Portales, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team opened Lone Star Conference play with a 2-1 victory over West Texas A&M University on Sunday, Sept. 23rd at the ENMU Soccer Field. This was the first time in the program’s history that the Zias defeated West Texas as they improved their overall record to 7-2 and 1-0 in LSC play. The Lady Buffs dropped their overall record to 6-2 and 0-1 in the LSC.

After starting the season with two losses, ENMU has won seven in a row, the best winning streak in the fifth year of the program’s history. The 7-2 start is the best nine-game start in program history.

Eastern got on the board first, as Hannah Dozier (Fr., F, Midland, Texas/Midland HS) provided a cross pass for Samantha Lawrence’s (So., F, Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) fifth goal of the season. The 1-0 lead at the 17:38 mark would hold through the first 45 minutes of play.

The teams continued to battle in the first 10 minutes of the second half until the Lady Buffs’ Elisabeth Markussen picked up a rebound and tied the game at one at the 56:08 mark. Both defenses remained strong for the next 19 minutes, when Leslie Weber (So., F, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS) delivered the ball to Dozier, who put it into the net (75:08) for her fifth goal of her freshman campaign. It was her second game winner of the season.

Eastern’s Stephanie Sanchez (Sr., GK, Belen, N.M./Belen HS) was very solid in goal as WT’s offense stepped up the pressure in the second half. After recording only one save prior to the break, Sanchez had five saves in the second half. Lawrence was very active throughout the game, credited with three shots, two on goal, including her score in the first half. She has scored in three consecutive games.

ENMU will continue its home stand with two LSC matches this coming weekend. The Zias will play Angelo State University on Friday, Sept. 28th at 2 p.m. MST and Abilene Christian University on Sunday, Sept. 30th at 2 p.m. MST.
